NAME THAT BOOK

First meeting on Monday, February 3rd!

3-4pm in the Pre-K Classrooms

Please join us for K-2 Name that Book Book Club!

PK students are welcome to attend the Book Club Days but are not able to tryout for the team in April. We will read and discuss 25 books over the next few months and later our selected team will compete in a district wide competition that tests our students' ability to remember quotes from the books in a rapid fire team competition. The book club portion of Name that Book is open to all students PK-2, participants must attend with a parent/guardian.

What is Name That Book?
This year the Name That Book contest is being coordinated by HISD volunteers in media services at various district schools. The district-wide competition using each school team will be held in May 2025.

What is the competition like?
Students in grades K-2 read books from a selected list. The focus is on reading with memorizing, picture memory and comprehension. Multiple re-readings may be necessary. In May 2025 there will be a
competition where the selected student teams are placed together and presented with direct quotes or descriptions including picture descriptions. They are allowed 1 minute to quietly discuss and present the book that represents the right answer. No speaking is allowed while answering. The students will receive a numbered list of the book covers and using an iPad, will enter a number to represent the book as their answer. This requires intense concentration and cooperation between team members with quiet, healthy discussions.

Time commitments: We will have a brief introduction to the competition and how the team is selected at our first book club meeting on Feb 3rd. Book club which is open to all PK*-2 grade students will take place on Feb 3, 10, 24, March 3, 17 and April 7, there will be 2 mock tests (March 17 and April 7). We will have tryouts for the final team selection on April 14. All discussions, mock tryouts and tryouts will be 3:00 to 4:00 pm promptly in the Pre-K classrooms. Students MUST have a responsible adult with them per school guidelines. You will pick your student up from school as normal and come together to the Pre- K classrooms.

*Pre-K students are invited to participate in book club but will not be allowed to tryout for the competition
team.

Student expectations:
Each student is expected to read all of the books and encouraged to write down and bring ten questions per book on the books they read. This can be direct quotes, settings or picture descriptions.

Parent Support: Parental involvement is crucial to success in the reading mission. We use a sign up genius to allow students/parents to sign up to present different books to the group as part of the club.

The West University K-2 Name that Book team has won first or second place in the competition since 2013!

So students - Bring out your passion to read, sharpen your good memory for details, and dedicate the time to reading and comprehending...(many times!)
