WUES Math Enrichment
WUES Math EnrichmentS is fortunate to have not one, but two math clubs!
Both clubs seeks to foster confidence in problem-solving skills and a love of math. One is a WUES faculty-led coaching session for the Continental Math League (CML) contests. While the contests are administered to all WUES students in grades 2-5 during math ancillary, the club is offered only to kids in grades 3-5. It is run by Ms. Symonette, one of WUES’ math ancillary teachers. In the past, CML meetings have been held on Thursdays after school. For more information about the CML club, please contact Ms. Symonette.
The other club, the Math Olympiad Club, is run by the PTO under the direction of Curriculum Enrichment chair, Jennifer Welch. It is offered to 4th and 5th grade students with a keen interest in math. The elementary Math Olympiad is the first level of math competition that ultimately leads to the US Math team that attends the International Math Olympiad. In addition to problem-solving skills related to the Math Olympiad contests, club members work on math games, puzzles and number sense during club meetings.
Club members take the five Math Olympiad contests during club meetings, one per month, between November and March. For more information about the contests and the organization that conducts them, please visit www.moems.org.
